Province’s autism lending library finds new home

AutismBC’s lending library has a new home.
After lending books and resources to families
across the province since the early 1980s, the library re-opened this week in
Sea Island’s Goodlife Fitness Family Autism Hub.
Sporting a collection of more than 1,600
books, DVDs and educational games, the library has the biggest collection of
autism-specific resources covering the lifespan needs of those affected by
autism.
The library will continue to ship, for free,
resources to families across B.C., in addition to providing a free return
shipping envelope to ensure equal accessibility, regardless of location.
“Providing families across the province with
access to information, support and education are the three pillars on which
AutismBC was founded over 40 years ago,” said Andrew Pinfold, AutismBC’s
director of operations. “We are grateful to the Canucks Autism Network and the
Pacific Autism Family Network for their generous donations, which ensured this
library could become a central resource for families.”
Aside from a new home, the library will also
be offering new programming, including Storytime and Music in Motion, which
receive ongoing support from SOAR Preschool and ET Music Therapy.
“Creating opportunity for collaboration and
better access to services for families is why the Pacific Autism Family Network
and Goodlife Fitness Family Autism Hub was created,” said Pacific Autism Family
Network’s Dawn McKenna. “We are happy the lending library is now settled into
its new home and can continue to benefit families across the province.”
Richmond’s Kaye Banez, a parent of a child on
the autism spectrum and the author of a book inspired by her son, led the first
Storytime in the space by reading from that book, See Yah in the Morning! A
bedtime story.
“Our family was so excited to be involved in
this momentous event; the lending library is accessible to everyone and it was
wonderful to meet families like us and share our story and our journey,” Banez
said.
